Best Time to Trade Gold in South Africa: Sessions, Volatility and What to Know
BY TIOmarkets
|March 21, 2026Gold is one of the most widely traded commodities in the world and one of the most actively watched financial instruments across all asset classes. For traders in South Africa, understanding when gold tends to be most liquid, most volatile, and most responsive to market events makes it easier to plan a trading approach and manage costs effectively.
South Africa Standard Time (SAST) is UTC+2 year-round with no daylight saving adjustment. This places South African forex traders in a favourable position relative to the London session, which is the primary driver of gold activity, with the London open falling in the mid-morning and the New York session running through the afternoon and evening in SAST.
What Drives Gold Price Movements
Gold prices are influenced by a broad range of factors that distinguish it from currency pairs and most other commodities. Understanding these drivers helps identify which times of day and which events are most likely to produce significant price movements.
The US dollar is the most closely watched factor for gold. Because gold is priced in US dollars (as XAUUSD), there is typically an inverse relationship between the dollar and gold: when the dollar strengthens, gold priced in dollars tends to fall, and when the dollar weakens, gold tends to rise. This means any event that moves the USD significantly, including Federal Reserve rate decisions, US inflation data, and non-farm payrolls, tends to have a direct impact on gold.
Interest rates and real yields are closely connected to gold. Gold pays no interest or dividend, so when interest rates rise and the opportunity cost of holding gold increases, gold can face downward pressure. Conversely, when rates fall or real yields decline, gold tends to attract more buying interest.
Safe-haven demand drives gold during periods of geopolitical tension, financial market stress, or broad risk-off sentiment. During these periods, gold can move sharply and often independently of its usual relationship with the dollar.
Physical demand from major consuming nations, central bank buying and selling, and broader commodity market sentiment also influence gold prices over longer time horizons, though these factors tend to be less relevant to short-term intraday trading decisions.
Gold Trading Sessions and SAST Times
Gold is traded on a near-continuous basis during the week, closely following the opening and closing of major financial centres. Activity and liquidity vary considerably across the trading day, and the times at which gold tends to be most active correspond closely to the major forex trading sessions.
Asian session (Tokyo): Gold activity during the Asian session tends to be relatively subdued compared to European and North American hours. In SAST terms, the Tokyo session runs from approximately 01:00 to 10:00 year-round, as Japan does not observe daylight saving time. While some movement occurs during Asian hours, particularly if there is significant news from China or other Asian markets, spreads on gold can be wider and price ranges narrower during this window.
London session: The London session is where gold activity picks up significantly. As European markets open and institutional order flow increases, liquidity in gold improves and spreads typically tighten. In SAST, the London session opens at approximately 09:00 during northern hemisphere summer (when the UK observes BST) and approximately 10:00 during northern hemisphere winter (when the UK observes GMT). The London session runs until approximately 18:00 or 19:00 SAST depending on the season.
European economic data releases and broader market sentiment during the London session regularly drive gold movement. The London session is also when many institutional positions in gold are established or adjusted for the trading day.
London and New York overlap: The overlap between the London and New York sessions is generally the most active period for gold trading. Both major financial centres are simultaneously open, institutional volume is at its highest, and US economic data releases often fall during this window. In SAST, the overlap runs from approximately 15:00 to 18:00 during northern hemisphere summer and approximately 16:00 to 19:00 during northern hemisphere winter.
This afternoon window in SAST is when gold tends to see its largest intraday price movements and its tightest spreads. It is the window most watched by short-term and intraday gold traders.
New York session: After the London session closes, the New York session continues alone. Gold remains active during early New York hours, particularly around US data releases and Federal Reserve communications. Activity typically diminishes as the New York session progresses into the evening. In SAST terms, the New York session runs from approximately 15:00 or 16:00 until midnight or 01:00 SAST depending on the season.
The most significant US data releases for gold, including non-farm payrolls, CPI figures, and Federal Reserve rate decisions, typically fall in the first half of the New York session, which in SAST corresponds to the late afternoon and early evening.
The New York Gold Fix and LBMA Reference Prices
Gold has two widely referenced price benchmarks set each trading day by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA): the AM fix set around 10:30 London time and the PM fix set around 15:00 London time. In SAST, the AM fix occurs at approximately 11:30 or 12:30 depending on the UK season, and the PM fix at approximately 16:00 or 17:00 SAST.
These reference prices are used by institutional participants to value gold holdings and settle contracts. The period around the PM fix in particular can sometimes see a temporary increase in gold activity as institutional orders are submitted ahead of the fixing process.
High-Impact Events for Gold Traders in South Africa
The following categories of events tend to produce the most significant short-term gold price movements and are worth monitoring on an economic calendar:
US Federal Reserve interest rate decisions and commentary from Fed officials are among the most influential events for gold. These typically fall during New York session hours, which in SAST is the late afternoon and evening.
US non-farm payrolls, released on the first Friday of each month at 13:30 UTC (approximately 15:30 SAST in summer, 15:30 SAST in winter), consistently produce sharp moves in both the US dollar and gold.
US Consumer Price Index (CPI) releases, which give the clearest reading on US inflation, are closely watched for their implications for Federal Reserve policy and therefore for gold.
Geopolitical events and broad financial market risk sentiment can drive gold sharply at any time of day regardless of session, including outside normal peak liquidity hours.
Spreads and Costs When Trading Gold
Gold (XAUUSD) is traded as a CFD at TIOmarkets with one standard lot equal to 100 troy ounces, a mini lot of 10 ounces (0.1 lots), and a micro lot of one ounce (0.01 lots). The minimum trade size is 0.01 lots.
Spreads on gold are variable and fluctuate with market conditions. They are typically tighter during the London session and the London and New York overlap when liquidity is highest, and can widen during the Asian session, around major news events, and at the open and close of the trading day. Always check the current spread inside the MT4 or MT5 platform before placing a trade.
Overnight financing charges apply to gold positions held past the daily rollover. These are generally calculated on a different basis from the forex triple swap mechanism. For current financing rates on XAUUSD, check the contract specifications inside the MT4 or MT5 platform by right-clicking the symbol in the Market Watch window and selecting Specification.
On the Standard and VIP Black accounts, no commission is charged on commodity trades. On the Raw account, a commission of $6 per round turn lot applies. For a 0.01 lot gold trade (one ounce), the commission on a Raw account is $0.06. Orders are executed at the best available market price, which may result in positive or negative slippage during volatile conditions.
Gold Trading Hours
Gold trading hours vary and the exact open and close times for XAUUSD should be confirmed inside the MT4 or MT5 platform for the most current information. In general, gold follows the major financial session schedule closely, with activity beginning as Asian markets open and continuing through the London and New York sessions before a brief daily close.
Weekend trading is not available for gold. The market closes on Friday afternoon and reopens Sunday evening, which in SAST corresponds to late evening Sunday. The gap between Friday's close and Sunday's reopening can produce price gaps at the open, particularly if significant news has occurred over the weekend.
