Forex Trading Account in South Africa: How to Open and What to Know
BY TIOmarkets
|March 21, 2026Opening a forex trading account in South Africa is a straightforward process that can be completed in a few minutes online. The steps involved, from registration through to placing your first trade, follow a consistent pattern across most reputable brokers. Understanding what each step involves, what documents you need, and how the funding and verification process works helps you get started without unnecessary delays.
This guide covers how to open a forex trading account in South Africa with TIOmarkets, what to expect at each stage, and the key conditions that apply before you can trade and withdraw.
Step One: Register Your Account
The account opening process begins with registration. You will need to provide your personal details including your full name, email address, and country of residence. Once submitted, your account profile is created and you can access the client area.
At TIOmarkets, a Standard account is created automatically when you register. You do not need to select the Standard account separately during registration. If you want to open a Raw or VIP Black account, you can do so at any time through the client area under the same user profile after registration is complete.
The registration process takes only a few minutes. Once registered, you can download the MT4 or MT5 trading platform from the client area download centre.
Step Two: Choose Your Account Type
Before funding your account, it is worth confirming which account type suits your trading approach and budget. TIOmarkets offers three main live account types for South African traders.
The Standard account has a minimum spread of 1.1 pips, no commission per trade, leverage up to unlimited on MT5, and a minimum deposit of R500. It is created automatically on registration and is available on both MT4 and MT5. This account is well suited to traders who prefer a straightforward zero-commission structure and want access to the full range of instruments from a low entry point.
The Raw account has spreads from 0.0 pips, a commission of $6 per round turn lot, leverage up to 1:500 on request, and a minimum deposit of R6,250. It is available on MT4 and MT5 and must be opened through the client area after registration. This account suits traders who prioritise tight spreads and are comfortable with a per-trade commission, particularly those trading at higher volumes or using scalping strategies.
The VIP Black account has spreads from 0.3 pips, no commission, leverage up to 1:500 on request, and a minimum deposit of R25,000. It is available on MT4 and MT5 and must also be opened through the client area. This account suits traders who want tighter-than-standard spreads without paying commission per trade and are starting with a larger account balance.
All three accounts support hedging, execution in milliseconds, and a maximum of 200 open and pending orders per client. The maximum lot size per trade is 20 lots across all accounts. Margin call is set at 100% and stop out at 30% on all accounts.
A demo account with up to $50,000 in virtual funds is also available for practising without financial risk. Demo accounts often execute instantly and may not fully replicate live slippage conditions encountered in live trading.
Step Three: Verify Your Identity
Verification is required before any withdrawal can be processed. You will need to upload proof of identity and proof of address. Accepted documents typically include a government-issued identity document or passport for identity verification, and a recent utility bill or bank statement for address verification.
TIOmarkets provides a 14-day grace period following registration during which you can fund your account and trade without completing full verification. After 14 days, full verification must be completed before any withdrawal is processed. It is advisable to submit your documents early to avoid delays when you want to withdraw funds.
All verification is completed through the secure client area. Once documents are submitted, they are reviewed by the TIOmarkets team.
Step Four: Fund Your Account
Once your account is registered and you are ready to trade, you need to deposit funds into your TIOmarkets wallet and then transfer them to your trading account within the client area.
South African traders can fund their accounts in ZAR. The minimum deposit for a Standard account is R500. For the Raw account, the minimum is R6,250, and for the VIP Black account it is R25,000.
Deposits by debit or credit card from South Africa are processed instantly. Bank wire transfers can take up to five business days. There are no deposit fees when the minimum amount is met.
ZAR deposits are supported by debit and credit card. If you deposit using a method or currency that is not directly supported, the payment processor will automatically convert your deposit into the base currency of your account at the prevailing exchange rate.
Deposits made from an account not in your name are not permitted and will be returned. Deposits on weekends and public holidays via instant methods are credited automatically. Bank wire deposits require banking hours to process.
Step Five: Transfer Funds to Your Trading Platform
After making a deposit, funds are held in your TIOmarkets wallet. You need to transfer them from your wallet to your specific trading account before you can place trades. This is done through the manage funds section of the client area. Select the trading account you want to fund, enter the amount, and confirm the transfer.
Once the transfer is complete, your trading account balance will reflect the deposited amount and you can log into MT4 or MT5 and begin trading.
Step Six: Download the Platform and Place Your First Trade
MT4 and MT5 are available for download from the client area on desktop for Windows and macOS, and from the App Store and Google Play for iOS and Android. Your trading account login credentials are sent to you by email when the account is created. Keep these details secure.
Once logged in, you can find instruments in the Market Watch window, right-click to open a chart or place a new order, and set your trade parameters including lot size, stop loss, and take profit before executing. Orders are executed at the best available market price, which may result in positive or negative slippage during volatile conditions.
If you want to practise before trading with real funds, the demo account provides a simulated environment with virtual funds. Demo accounts are a useful way to familiarise yourself with the platform, but they do not fully replicate the conditions of live trading including slippage and variable spreads.
What to Know About Costs and Fees
Understanding the full cost of trading before you start helps you manage your account more effectively.
Spreads on all accounts are variable and fluctuate with market conditions. They are typically higher than the minimum figures shown and can widen during volatile periods and around major economic data releases.
On the Standard and VIP Black accounts, no commission is charged per trade. On the Raw account, the commission is $6 per round turn lot, charged in full when the position is opened and covering both the opening and closing of the trade. At 0.1 lots the commission is $0.60 and at 0.01 lots it is $0.06.
Swap charges or credits apply to positions held past the daily rollover. Rates vary by instrument. For current swap rates, check the contract specifications inside the MT4 or MT5 platform.
A dormancy fee of $30 per month applies if no positions are open and no trades have been placed in the previous three months.
Withdrawals are processed within one business day by TIOmarkets. ZAR withdrawals are processed by debit or credit card only. Bank wire, e-wallet, and mobile money methods do not support ZAR withdrawals. There are no withdrawal fees for amounts of R500 or the currency equivalent or more. Below that threshold, fees apply depending on the method used.
What to Know About Leverage and Risk
All account types at TIOmarkets offer leverage, which allows you to open positions larger than your account balance would support without leverage. The Standard account offers leverage up to unlimited on MT5 using an equity-based model. The Raw and VIP Black accounts offer leverage up to 1:500 on request. Leverage is optional and can be adjusted to a lower level if preferred.
Trading with leverage amplifies both potential profits and potential losses. Higher leverage means a smaller adverse price movement can have a significant impact on your account. Understanding the pip value of your positions and using stop-loss orders consistently are important risk management practices, particularly when starting out.
All leverage figures are subject to change depending on market conditions and applicable regulatory requirements.
