How to Remove an Indicator from MT4
BY TIOmarkets
|June 10, 2026Adding indicators to a chart is straightforward in MetaTrader 4, but charts can quickly become crowded if old indicators are left in place. Knowing how to remove an indicator cleanly, or how to clear an entire chart in one step, is a basic part of keeping your workspace organised.
This guide covers three methods for removing an indicator from MT4: directly from the chart by right-clicking the indicator line, through the Indicators List dialog, and by removing all indicators from a chart at once. It also explains how to edit an indicator without removing it, and covers the equivalent flow on MT4 mobile.
Why Remove an Indicator
Indicators are useful when they are giving you information you actively use. They become noise when they are not. Charts with too many overlapping indicators are harder to read, and oscillator subwindows pile up below the price, taking space away from the price chart itself.
Removing an indicator does not delete its settings permanently. If the indicator was part of a saved template, it remains in the template and can be reapplied later. Removing it from a chart simply unloads that instance from that chart's display.
It is also normal to add multiple instances of the same indicator (for example, two moving averages at different periods). Each instance is independent, and each one can be removed individually.
Method 1: Right-Click the Indicator Line
The most direct method is to right-click on the indicator itself on the chart.
For overlay indicators (those drawn on the price chart, such as moving averages or Bollinger Bands): hover over any visible part of the indicator line until the cursor changes to indicate the line is selectable, then right-click. A context menu appears with options including Delete Indicator. Select Delete Indicator to remove it.
For subwindow indicators (oscillators such as RSI, MACD, or Stochastic, drawn in their own subwindow beneath the price chart): right-click on the indicator line inside its subwindow. The context menu includes Delete Indicator (for that specific indicator only) and Delete Indicator Window (which removes the indicator and closes the subwindow it occupies).
If the indicator line is not visible (for example, if the line is off-screen or hidden behind another indicator), use Method 2 instead.
Method 2: Charts > Indicators List
The Indicators List provides a comprehensive view of every indicator currently applied to the active chart.
Open the dialog via Charts > Indicators List from the menu bar. A window appears listing all indicators on the active chart, including multiple instances of the same indicator if more than one has been added.
Select the indicator you want to remove from the list, then click Delete. The indicator is removed from the chart and disappears from the list.
You can also use this dialog to edit an indicator's parameters before deciding whether to remove it. Select the indicator and click Edit to open its parameter dialog, where you can adjust settings without removing the indicator.
This method is the most reliable when several indicators are stacked or when the indicator line is hard to click on directly.
Method 3: Delete All Indicators at Once
To clear an entire chart of indicators in one operation, use Charts > Indicators List > Delete All. This removes every indicator on the active chart, including all subwindow indicators and any associated subwindows.
This is useful when starting fresh with a clean chart, when switching between strategies that use different indicator sets, or when preparing a chart for a new template.
Note that Delete All removes only indicators. It does not remove graphical objects such as trendlines, horizontal lines, Fibonacci tools, or text labels. To remove those, use Charts > Objects > Delete All separately.
Editing an Indicator Without Removing It
If you want to change an indicator's settings rather than remove it, there are two ways to open the parameter dialog.
Right-click on the indicator line and select Properties, or double-click directly on the line. The parameter dialog opens, and changes apply after you click OK.
Alternatively, from Charts > Indicators List, select the indicator and click Edit. The same parameter dialog opens.
Editing rather than removing is useful when you want to keep the indicator but change its period, levels, colour, or style. There is no need to delete and re-add an indicator just to adjust its settings.
Removing Indicators on Mobile
The MT4 mobile app for iOS and Android has its own interface for managing indicators on a chart.
Open the chart, then tap the indicators icon (typically labelled with an "f" symbol or accessible via the chart menu). A list of currently applied indicators appears. Tap the indicator you want to remove to open its settings, then look for a Delete option in the indicator's menu. The exact label and location of the Delete option may vary between iOS and Android builds.
Alternatively, on some mobile builds you can swipe an indicator entry in the list to reveal a delete action.
The Delete All equivalent is typically also available from the same indicators management view, though it may be labelled differently or require an additional confirmation.
Practical Considerations
Templates are not affected when you remove an indicator from a single chart. If the indicator is part of a saved template, it remains in the template file and reapplies whenever the template is applied to a new chart.
If you frequently use the same set of indicators and want to switch between configurations, saving each configuration as a template is more efficient than adding and removing indicators each time. Right-click chart > Template > Save Template, or use Charts > Template > Save Template.
Profiles preserve indicators across all charts in a workspace. If you save a profile, the indicators currently applied to each chart are part of the saved profile and will reappear when the profile is reloaded.
Removing an indicator does not affect any related drawing objects you have placed manually. Trendlines, horizontal lines, and Fibonacci tools persist on the chart unless explicitly removed.
