How to Connect MT4 to a Broker
BY TIOmarkets
|June 10, 2026MetaTrader 4 is a trading platform built by MetaQuotes, but it does not connect to any market by itself. To place real trades or view live prices, MT4 needs to be connected to a broker's servers, and those servers handle quotes, order routing, account balances, and trade history. The connection between your local terminal and the broker is the foundation of everything else you do in the platform.
This guide explains how the broker connection works on MT4, how to log in to TIOmarkets servers from a fresh installation, what to do if your broker's server does not appear in the dropdown, and how to confirm that the connection is healthy. The instructions apply to MT4 on desktop; mobile and web versions handle server selection in similar but slightly different ways.
What "Connecting MT4 to a Broker" Actually Means
When you launch MT4, the terminal needs to communicate with a trading server to receive price data and send orders. Each broker runs its own servers under its own name. A TIOmarkets account, for example, can only log in to TIOmarkets servers; credentials from one broker do not work on another broker's servers, and the platform identifies the right destination through the server name you select at login.
There are two common starting points. If you download MT4 directly from a broker's website, the installer typically comes pre-configured with that broker's servers, and they appear in the Server dropdown automatically. If you download a generic MT4 installer from MetaQuotes, the server list will not include your broker by default, and you need to add it manually through the Login dialog. The instructions below cover both situations.
Downloading MT4 from TIOmarkets
The simplest way to get a TIOmarkets-ready installation is to download MT4 from the TIOmarkets MT4 page. The Windows installer is provided directly on that page and ships pre-configured with the TIOmarkets server list. After running the installer and launching the platform for the first time, the Server field in the Login dialog will already show the TIOmarkets servers, and you can log in without any extra configuration.
The MT4 web platform, also linked from the TIOmarkets MT4 page, is another route that does not require any installation at all. It runs in a modern browser and connects to the same TIOmarkets servers as the desktop version. Mobile versions of MT4 are available through the App Store and Google Play; they too can connect to TIOmarkets after entering your account credentials.
Logging In to TIOmarkets Servers
Once MT4 is installed (or open in the web version), the next step is to log in. From the File menu, select "Login to Trade Account." A small dialog opens with three fields.
In the Login field, enter your TIOmarkets account number. This is the numeric login that TIOmarkets sends by email when your account is opened. In the Password field, enter the trader password for the account. In the Server field, select the appropriate TIOmarkets server from the dropdown. For live trading, the server is TIOMarkets-Live1, and for demo trading it is TIOMarkets-Demo1. If you want MT4 to remember the credentials for next time, tick the "Save account information" checkbox. Click Login.
If the credentials match a valid account on the selected server, MT4 connects and begins receiving live prices. If anything is incorrect (wrong login number, wrong password, wrong server, or expired account), MT4 returns an "Invalid account" or similar error in the Journal tab (Ctrl+T > Journal). The Journal is the first place to check whenever a login attempt fails.
Adding a Broker Server Manually
If you are using a generic MT4 installation that does not have TIOmarkets servers in the dropdown, you can add them manually. In the Login dialog, type "TIOMarkets" into the Server field and press Enter or click the small dropdown arrow. MT4 scans for matching servers and adds any it finds to the list. Once TIOMarkets-Live1 and TIOMarkets-Demo1 appear, select the correct one for your account and continue with the login as described above.
Behind the scenes, the platform is looking up the server in MetaQuotes' broker directory using the name you typed. The scan is automatic and usually completes in a few seconds, provided your internet connection is open and no firewall is blocking outbound connections from MT4. If the scan does not return any servers, check that you have spelled the server name correctly and that the platform has network access. Reinstalling from the TIOmarkets-provided installer is the easiest workaround if the manual scan does not work.
Verifying the Connection
After logging in, you should confirm that the platform is actually connected before placing any trade. MT4 shows the connection state in the bottom-right corner of the main window.
If you see green bars next to the account number, the terminal is connected and receiving live data. If you see a red X, the terminal is disconnected. Disconnection can happen for several reasons: internet drop, server-side maintenance, firewall blocking, or invalid login credentials still saved from a previous session. Hovering over the indicator shows additional detail, and the Journal tab (Ctrl+T > Journal) logs every connection event with a timestamp and a server response message.
Another quick check is to open the Market Watch window with Ctrl+M. If prices are updating in real time (numbers ticking up and down), the connection is healthy. If prices are frozen or showing dashes, the terminal is not receiving data, regardless of what the bottom-right indicator suggests.
Common Connection Issues and What to Check
If MT4 cannot connect to the TIOmarkets server, run through the following checks in order. First, confirm that your internet connection is working by opening any website in a browser. Second, check that the Server field shows TIOMarkets-Live1 or TIOMarkets-Demo1 (matching the account type you are trying to log in with). Third, double-check the login number and password by looking at the account confirmation email or the TIOmarkets client area. Fourth, check whether a firewall or antivirus is blocking MT4; the platform needs outbound network access to communicate with the trading server, and security software occasionally interferes.
If everything looks correct but the platform still cannot connect, the next step is to check the Journal tab for the specific error message. The Journal records every connection attempt and the server's response. The exact wording of the error usually points to the cause. If you cannot resolve the issue from the Journal log, contact TIOmarkets support with the time of the attempt and a copy of the relevant Journal lines.
