What is ETF trading?

ETF trading involves buying and selling exchange traded funds, which are investment funds traded on stock exchanges.

An ETF typically holds a portfolio of assets or follows the performance of a particular market, index or investment strategy. Depending on the fund, it may provide exposure to company shares, government and corporate bonds, precious metals or other assets.

For example, an S&P 500 ETF provides exposure to the performance of the S&P 500 index, while a gold ETF aims to reflect movements in the price of gold.

ETFs are commonly used to access groups of assets through a single exchange traded instrument. However, their underlying holdings, concentration and risk characteristics can vary.

With TIOmarkets, you can trade ETFs through contracts for difference (CFDs), allowing you to take long or short positions with leverage and without purchasing units in the underlying funds.

What is ETF trading?

How does ETF trading work?

ETF trading involves speculating on whether the market price of an exchange traded fund will rise or fall.
Instead of buying and owning units in an ETF, you trade a CFD based on changes in the ETF's market price.

For example, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) tracks the S&P 500 index.

Buying VOO

If VOO rises from $700 to $720, a buy position gains value.

If VOO rises from $700 to $720, a buy position gains value.

Selling VOO

If VOO falls from $700 to $680, a sell position gains value.

If VOO falls from $700 to $680, a sell position gains value.

In either case, an adverse price movement against your position will cause a loss. Your actual trading result also depends on position size, spreads, commissions and other applicable costs.

What moves ETF prices?

ETF prices are influenced by the performance of their underlying assets, market conditions and investor demand. The factors affecting an ETF depend on the market or investment strategy it tracks. These can include:

  • Underlying asset prices

Movements in the shares, bonds or commodities held or tracked by an ETF can influence its market value.

  • Economic conditions

Interest rates, inflation and economic growth can affect equity and bond markets.

  • Corporate earnings

Financial results and company announcements can influence equity ETFs, particularly those with substantial exposure to large companies.

  • Industry performance

Developments in sectors such as technology, healthcare or energy can affect sector focused ETFs.

  • Exchange rates

Exchange rate fluctuations can affect ETFs with exposure to international markets.

Because several factors interact at once, different ETFs can react differently to the same economic developments.

ETF Trading FAQs

What is ETF trading?

ETF trading involves buying and selling exchange traded funds, which provide exposure to a portfolio of assets or a particular market strategy. With TIOmarkets, ETF CFDs allow you to trade movements in ETF prices without owning units in the underlying funds.

Which ETFs can I trade with TIOmarkets?

TIOmarkets offers 25 ETF CFDs covering US and international equities, technology, emerging markets, bonds, gold and silver. Available instruments include funds from Vanguard, iShares, SPDR, Invesco and ProShares. Compare our trading platforms.

What is the difference between ETF CFDs and owning ETFs?

Buying ETF shares gives you ownership of units in the underlying fund. ETF CFDs provide exposure to changes in the ETF's market price without granting ownership or shareholder rights. With ETF CFDs, you can also trade with leverage.

What are the costs of ETF trading?

ETF CFD trading costs can include spreads, commissions and overnight financing charges. Distribution related adjustments may also apply. Learn more about trading fees.

Are ETF CFDs leveraged?

Yes. ETF CFDs are traded on leverage and margin, meaning you can control a larger position with a smaller initial capital requirement. Leverage increases exposure to market movements and amplifies both potential profits and losses.

Can I buy and sell ETF CFDs?

Yes. ETF CFDs allow you to open buy positions when you expect an ETF's price to rise and sell positions when you expect it to fall. Both directions involves risk, and adverse price movements can result in losses. Compare our trading account types.
