How to Partially Close a Trade on MT4

A partial close lets you reduce the size of an open position without closing the entire trade. Rather than exiting in one go, you close a portion of the volume and leave the remainder open to continue running. This is a common technique for taking some profit off the table while keeping exposure to further moves, or for reducing risk after the trade has moved in your favour.

This guide covers how to partially close a trade on MetaTrader 4, the minimum lot size constraint that applies to both the closed portion and the remainder, what happens to the trade ticket after a partial close, and how the process works on MT4 mobile.

Why Partially Close a Trade

A partial close is useful in several scenarios. These are descriptions of common practice, not advice.

Scaling out of a profitable position: closing half (or another fraction) at a first target while leaving the rest to run toward a further target. The closed portion locks in profit; the remainder retains upside.

Reducing risk after a favourable move: if a trade is in profit but not yet at a defined target, closing part of it removes some position-size risk while keeping a stake in the trade.

Adjusting exposure to news or events: closing part of a position before a high-impact release can reduce volatility risk while keeping a directional bias.

Managing an account-wide exposure limit: closing part of one position to free margin for a different setup.

The mechanics described below apply to all of these.

How to Partially Close a Trade on MT4

MetaTrader 4 offers two main entry points into the same close-order dialog.

Method 1: Right-Click the Position in the Terminal

Press Ctrl+T to open the Terminal window. The Trade tab lists your open positions. Right-click the row of the position you want to partially close and select Close Order from the context menu.

The Order dialog opens. The Type dropdown shows the position's current state; below it, the Volume field shows the position's full size. Change the Volume value to the lot size you want to close. For example, if the position is 1.0 lot and you want to close half, set Volume to 0.50. The yellow Close button at the bottom shows the partial volume and current close price. Click it to execute the close.

Method 2: Double-Click the Position

Double-clicking the position row in the Trade tab opens the same Order dialog. Adjust the Volume and click Close.

After the Close

The closed portion appears in the Account History tab in the Terminal with its own line, showing the volume closed, the open and close prices, and the realised P&L. The remaining position stays in the Trade tab with the reduced volume; its open price, stop loss, take profit, and any associated swap remain unchanged on the remaining size.

Minimum Lot Size Constraint

Both the closed portion and the remaining position must be at or above your account's minimum lot size.

On the Standard, Raw, and VIP Black accounts, the minimum lot size is 0.01. So a 0.02-lot position can be partially closed to leave 0.01 (closing 0.01), but it cannot be partially closed to leave 0.005 (which would be below the minimum) or to close 0.005 (also below the minimum).

On the Nano account, the minimum lot size is 0.001, so partial closes can be much finer.

If you enter a Volume that would leave a remainder below the minimum, MT4 rejects the modification. The fix is either to choose a Volume that respects the minimum on both sides, or to close the entire position.

Partial Close on MT4 Mobile

The MT4 mobile app supports partial close. Tap the position in the Trade tab to open its details, select Close Order, adjust the Volume to the lot size you want to close, and confirm. The same minimum lot size constraint applies on mobile.

Verifying the Partial Close

After execution, check two places. The Trade tab in the Terminal now shows the position with the reduced volume, with the original open price unchanged. The Account History tab shows the closed portion as a separate entry with its own realised P&L.

If the partial close was rejected, the Journal tab in the Terminal logs the reason. Common rejection reasons include a volume that would leave a sub-minimum remainder, a market that is currently closed for that instrument, or a connection issue with the server.

Practical Considerations

Partial closes use the current market price (bid for long positions, ask for short positions) at the moment of execution. Spread is implicit in this pricing. On the Raw and Nano accounts, the commission was charged in full at the moment the position was opened; closing a portion does not refund any commission. Subsequent closes of the remaining portion also do not incur new commission, because the full round-turn commission was already realised at open.

Stops level (minimum distance) rules apply to setting stop losses and take profits, but not to closing a position. You can close at any time the market is open.

For non-USD accounts, the realised P&L is converted to your account currency at the close. The TIOmarkets calculators do not have a specific "partial close" tool; use the Profit Calculator with the partial volume to estimate the P&L on the closed portion before executing.

Demo accounts allow practice of partial closes without financial risk. Use the demo to test the dialog and confirm the behaviour matches your expectations before applying it on live positions.

Trading at TIOmarkets

TIOmarkets offers MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 on desktop, web, and mobile, across four account types. The Standard account is created automatically on registration with a minimum deposit of $20 or currency equivalent. The Raw and VIP Black accounts are opened separately through the client area. The Nano account is MT5 only with a $20 minimum deposit, USD only. Hedging is supported on all accounts. A swap-free Islamic account is available; contact TIOmarkets for eligibility and instrument requirements. Copy trading is available on both MT4 and MT5.

Orders are executed at the best available market price, which may result in positive or negative slippage. Demo accounts often execute instantly and may not fully replicate live slippage conditions. Spreads are variable and are typically higher than minimum figures shown. Leverage on each instrument is subject to change depending on market conditions and applicable regulatory requirements. You can review the full list of account types on the TIOmarkets accounts page.
