MT4 vs MT5 (2026): Which Trading Platform Should You Choose?
BY TIOmarkets
|March 13, 2026MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 are the two trading platforms available at TIOmarkets. Both are well-established, support desktop, web, and mobile trading, and cater to beginners and experienced traders alike. The question of which to use comes down to your account type, your trading style, and the features you need. This guide compares MT4 and MT5 across every meaningful dimension to help you make that decision.
The Short Answer
MT5 has more of everything: more timeframes, more indicators, more graphical objects, more order types, more symbols, and a more capable strategy tester. It also includes a built-in economic calendar and access to the MQL5 community. MT4 remains a solid, familiar platform with a large library of existing tools and a straightforward interface. If you are starting fresh, MT5 is the stronger choice for most traders. If you rely on MT4-specific Expert Advisors or tools built in MQL4, MT4 remains relevant.
There is one situation where MT5 is not optional: TIOmarkets' unlimited leverage feature is only available on the Standard account using MT5. If you intend to use unlimited leverage, MT5 is required.
Timeframes and Charting
MT4 offers nine analytical timeframes. MT5 offers twenty-one. For traders who rely on timeframe flexibility, whether for scalping on very short intervals or analysing longer-term structure, MT5 provides considerably more granularity without switching between charts or workarounds.
Both platforms support multiple chart types including candlestick and bar charts. The additional timeframes in MT5 are available on the desktop platform.
Technical Indicators and Graphical Objects
MT4 includes 30 built-in technical indicators and 31 graphical objects. MT5 includes 38 built-in technical indicators and 44 graphical objects. Both platforms support custom indicators, so traders can extend either platform beyond its built-in toolkit. For traders who work primarily with the built-in suite, MT5 starts from a richer baseline.
Order Types and Fill Policies
MT4 supports four order execution types and four pending order types. The fill policy available is Fill or Kill. MT5 supports six order execution types and six pending order types, with three fill policies: Fill or Kill, Immediate or Cancel, and Return. The additional fill policies in MT5 give traders more precise control over how orders are handled when full execution is not immediately available, which is relevant for traders working in less liquid conditions or trading larger sizes.
Strategy Tester and Backtesting
The strategy tester is one of the most meaningful differences between the two platforms. MT4's strategy tester operates on a single thread and tests one currency at a time. MT5's strategy tester is multi-threaded, supports multi-currency testing, and uses real tick data. For traders who develop or backtest automated strategies, the MT5 strategy tester produces more accurate results and runs tests significantly faster.
Automated Trading and Expert Advisors
Both platforms support automated trading through Expert Advisors. MT4 uses the MQL4 scripting language, MT5 uses MQL5. Existing MT4 EAs written in MQL4 are not directly compatible with MT5 without modification or recompilation. If you have an established library of MT4 EAs that you rely on, this is a practical consideration before switching.
EA execution on both platforms requires the desktop application. Web and mobile versions of both MT4 and MT5 support order entry and account monitoring but do not run Expert Advisors.
Symbols Available
MT4 at TIOmarkets provides access to 175 symbols. MT5 provides access to 263 symbols. Traders who want access to a wider range of instruments, particularly across asset classes beyond major forex pairs, will find MT5's larger symbol library useful.
Economic Calendar
MT5 includes a built-in economic calendar. MT4 does not. For traders who track macroeconomic events and data releases directly from the platform, this is a meaningful convenience advantage for MT5.
MQL5 Community Chat
MT5 includes embedded access to the MQL5 community. MT4 does not. This gives MT5 users in-platform access to the broader MetaTrader developer and trader community.
VPS (Virtual Private Server)
A VPS service is available through MetaQuotes infrastructure, typically accessed via the Navigator panel on the desktop platform. This is a MetaQuotes service, not a TIOmarkets-provided service. It is relevant primarily for traders running Expert Advisors who need continuous uptime without keeping a local machine running.
Platform Availability by Device
Both MT4 and MT5 are available on desktop (Windows and macOS), web browser, and mobile (iOS and Android). The desktop version of each platform provides the full feature set including EA execution. Web and mobile versions support real-time market data, order entry and management, and account monitoring, but do not support EA execution.
Which Account Types Use Which Platform?
At TIOmarkets, the Nano account is available on MT5 only. The Standard, Raw, and VIP Black accounts are available on either MT4 or MT5. If you open a Standard account and intend to use unlimited leverage, MT5 is required, as the unlimited leverage feature is only available on that platform.
A Standard account is created automatically on registration. Raw and VIP Black accounts can be opened separately through the client area at any time.
MT4 vs MT5: A Summary
MT5 is the more capable platform across every technical dimension, including timeframes, indicators, order types, strategy testing, and symbol availability. It also includes the built-in economic calendar and MQL5 community access that MT4 lacks.
MT4 remains a practical choice for traders with existing MQL4 tools or EAs that have not been migrated to MQL5, and for those who prefer its familiar interface. The core trading functionality, including hedging, pending orders, and real-time data, is available on both.
For most traders opening an account at TIOmarkets in 2026, MT5 is the recommended starting point. It is the required platform for the Nano account and for the unlimited leverage feature on the Standard account, and it offers a richer toolkit for analysis, automation, and testing.
