Forex Trading Platforms in UAE: MT4, MT5 and How to Choose
BY TIOmarkets
|March 19, 2026Choosing the right trading platform is one of the most practical decisions a forex trader in the UAE can make.
The platform you use determines how you analyse markets, manage positions, and execute trades.
At TIOmarkets, forex traders in the UAE can access both MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) on desktop, web, and mobile. This guide explains what each platform offers, how they compare, and which may suit your approach to trading.
What Is a Forex Trading Platform?
A forex trading platform is software that connects you to the market and allows you to open, monitor, and close trades. It displays live price feeds, provides charting and technical analysis tools, and handles order execution. The platform you use also determines whether you can run automated trading strategies, access an economic calendar, or backtest a trading idea before deploying it with real capital.
In the UAE, MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 are the two most widely used platforms among retail forex traders. Both are developed by MetaQuotes Software and are available through TIOmarkets.
MetaTrader 4 (MT4): Overview
MT4 was designed primarily for forex and futures trading. It has been the dominant retail forex platform for well over a decade, and remains widely used because of its straightforward interface, strong automated trading support, and a large library of community-built tools.
MT4 Key Features
MT4 offers 9 analytical timeframes, 30 built-in technical indicators, and 31 graphical objects for chart annotation. It supports 4 order execution types and 4 pending order types, giving traders a solid set of tools for managing entries and exits.
The platform's strategy tester uses a single-threaded engine, allowing traders to backtest automated strategies against historical data. Automated trading is supported through Expert Advisors (EAs) written in MQL4. EAs can only run on the desktop version of MT4; the web and mobile versions support order entry and monitoring but do not execute EAs.
MT4 is available on Windows and macOS for desktop installation, and also as a web platform accessible from any modern browser, and as a mobile app for iOS and Android.
On MT4, TIOmarkets provides access to 175 symbols across forex, indices, stocks, and commodities. MT4 symbols use a "z" suffix format: for example, the EUR/USD pair appears as EURUSDz in the MT4 platform.
MT4 and Automated Trading
MT4 has a long-established ecosystem of custom indicators and EAs. If you have existing MQL4 strategies or access to a large library of community-built tools, MT4 keeps you within that ecosystem. For traders in the UAE who prioritise automation and a familiar interface, MT4 remains a capable choice.
Note that the VPS (Virtual Private Server) service available through MT4 is a MetaQuotes service, not provided by TIOmarkets. It is accessed via the Tools menu in the MT4 desktop application, and requires a valid MQL5 community account. MetaQuotes automatically selects the geographically closest server to the broker's trading servers.
MetaTrader 5 (MT5): Overview
MT5 is the successor to MT4 and was designed as a multi-asset platform from the outset. It expands on MT4's capabilities in several key areas: more timeframes, more indicators and graphical objects, more order types, a broader symbol range, and a more advanced strategy tester.
MT5 Key Features
MT5 offers 21 analytical timeframes, 38 built-in technical indicators, and 44 graphical objects. It supports 6 order execution types and 6 pending order types, including three order fill policies: Fill or Kill, Immediate or Cancel, and Return. MT4 supports only Fill or Kill.
MT5 includes a built-in economic calendar, which MT4 does not have. For traders who incorporate fundamental analysis or monitor high-impact news events as part of their strategy, this is a practical advantage. The platform also includes an embedded MQL5 community chat, which MT4 does not.
The MT5 strategy tester is multi-threaded, supports multi-currency testing, and can use real tick data, making it significantly more powerful than MT4's single-threaded tester for complex strategy development.
On MT5, TIOmarkets provides access to 263 symbols. Automated trading through EAs uses MQL5. Note that MQL4 EAs written for MT4 are not directly compatible with MT5 and may require rewriting or sourcing MQL5 versions before use on the new platform.
MT5 is available on Windows and macOS for desktop, as a web platform, and as a mobile app for iOS and Android. As with MT4, EA execution is desktop only; web and mobile support order entry and monitoring only.
On MT5, the VPS service is accessed by right-clicking the trading account in the Navigator window and selecting "Register a Virtual Server." A valid MQL5 community account is required. This is a MetaQuotes service.
MT4 vs MT5: Side-by-Side Comparison
MT5 leads MT4 across every measurable feature category. On timeframes, MT5 offers 21 against MT4's 9. On built-in indicators, MT5 has 38 against MT4's 30. On graphical objects, MT5 provides 44 against MT4's 31. MT5 supports 6 order execution types and 6 pending order types; MT4 supports 4 of each. On order fill policies, MT5 offers three options (Fill or Kill, Immediate or Cancel, and Return), while MT4 supports Fill or Kill only. On symbols, MT5 provides access to 263 against MT4's 175. MT5 includes a built-in economic calendar and an embedded MQL5 community chat; MT4 has neither. The MT5 strategy tester is multi-threaded, supports multi-currency testing, and uses real tick data; MT4's tester is single-threaded. MT5 uses the MQL5 scripting language; MT4 uses MQL4, and EAs written in MQL4 are not directly compatible with MT5.
Both platforms support hedging, and both are available on desktop (Windows and macOS), web, and mobile (iOS and Android).
Which Platform Is Right for You?
The right platform depends on how you trade and what you need from your tools.
MT4 may suit you if you already have MQL4 Expert Advisors, prefer a simpler interface with a well-established layout, or are focused primarily on forex trading. Its ecosystem of community tools is extensive and the platform is familiar to a large proportion of active retail traders globally.
MT5 may suit you if you want access to a wider range of symbols and timeframes, require more advanced order types, want a built-in economic calendar, or are developing or testing new automated strategies. The more powerful strategy tester is a meaningful advantage for traders who backtest seriously. MT5 is also the required platform for TIOmarkets' unlimited leverage feature on the Standard account.
If you are undecided, you can open a demo account on both platforms and compare them directly before committing to live trading.
