How to Reset Your MT4 Password

BY TIOmarkets

|June 10, 2026

The password for your MetaTrader 4 trading account is issued by TIOmarkets at the time of registration. If you want to change it for security reasons, or if you have forgotten the current password, there are two main paths to a new password: changing it from within MT4 (requires knowing the current password) or resetting it through the TIOmarkets client area (used when the current password has been lost).

This guide covers both paths, explains the difference between the master password and the investor password, and outlines what to do after the password has been changed. The flow is similar on both desktop and mobile MT4, with small differences in the menu paths.

Master Password vs Investor Password

Two passwords may be issued for each MT4 account.

The master password gives full trading access. With it, you can place trades, modify positions, and operate the account normally. This is the password you use day to day.

The investor password gives read-only access. With it, you can view positions, balance, and history, but you cannot place trades or make any changes. The investor password is typically used to share account view with a mentor, analyst, or accountant without giving them control.

Both passwords can be reset. The processes are similar, but they are separate; changing the master password does not change the investor password, and vice versa.

For normal use, the master password is the relevant one.

When You Might Need to Reset Your Password

Common reasons to reset:

  • The password has been forgotten and you can no longer log in.
  • You suspect the password may have been compromised.
  • Routine security practice, particularly if the same password has been used for an extended period.
  • You want to change the password to a value stored in your password manager.
  • You need to revoke an investor password that was previously shared with someone else.

Method 1: Change Your Password From Within MT4

If you know your current password, the simplest way to change it is from inside the platform.

Open MT4 and log in to the account whose password you want to change. Then go to Tools > Options to open the Options dialog. Click the Server tab.

The Server tab shows the current login number and a password field. Next to the password field is a Change button. Click Change.

A dialog appears with the following fields:

  • Current password: enter your existing master password.
  • New password: type the new master password.
  • Confirm: retype the new password to confirm.

Some MT4 builds also include a checkbox or radio option to choose between changing the master password and changing the investor password. If you want to change the investor password, select that option before entering the new value.

Click OK. The platform sends the change request to the TIOmarkets server. If the change succeeds, the new password is active immediately. If the change fails (for example, because the current password was entered incorrectly), an error message appears and the password is unchanged.

After a successful change, MT4 continues to use the new password automatically for the rest of the session. On the next launch, you will need to log in using the new password.

Method 2: Reset a Forgotten Password Through the TIOmarkets Client Area

If you have forgotten the current password, the in-platform change method will not work, because it requires the current password to authenticate the change.

The alternative is to reset the password through the TIOmarkets client area. The general process:

  1. Visit the TIOmarkets website and locate the client area login page.
  2. Click the "forgot password" or "reset password" link on the login page.
  3. Enter the email address used at registration.
  4. Check your email inbox (and the spam folder, in case the message is filtered) for a password reset message from TIOmarkets.
  5. Follow the link in the email to a password reset page.
  6. Enter and confirm the new password.

Once the reset is complete, the new password should be active and can be used to log in to MT4.

Note: the exact wording of buttons and emails may vary, and the password reset for the TIOmarkets client area login may be separate from the password reset for the MT4 trading account itself. If you are not sure which is which, or if the reset process does not work as expected, contact TIOmarkets support for direct assistance.

After Changing Your Password

A few things to confirm and consider after a successful change.

Log out and log back in. Use File > Logout (in some MT4 builds the option may be in a different location, such as right-click in Navigator > Accounts > Logout). Then log in again using the new password. This confirms the change took effect.

Update any saved credentials. If you had "Save account information" ticked, MT4 may have stored the old password. Logging in again with the new password and re-ticking the checkbox updates the stored value.

Update your password manager if you use one. Storing the new password securely is good practice.

Update any other devices. If you use MT4 on more than one computer, or on the MT4 mobile app, log in to each one with the new password. Sessions still using the old password may behave unexpectedly when reconnecting.

If you reset the master password, also consider whether the investor password needs to be reset. They are separate, and an old investor password remains valid until it too is changed.

Changing the Password on MT4 Mobile

The MT4 mobile app for iOS and Android also supports changing the password from within the app.

The typical path on Android is Menu > Manage Accounts > tap the account > Trade Account > Password. On iOS, the equivalent is Settings > Manage Accounts > tap the account > Password.

The change dialog asks for the current password and the new password. Some mobile builds also let you choose between master and investor password.

The exact path may differ between builds. If the password change option is not visible in the expected location, search the app's settings or contact TIOmarkets support for guidance specific to your build.

Password Security Best Practices

A few general guidelines apply to trading-account passwords.

Use a unique password for the MT4 account. Reusing passwords across services means that a breach of any one service can expose the trading account.

Use a strong password. A combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols, at least 12 characters long, is a reasonable baseline.

Store the password securely. A reputable password manager is more secure than a plain-text note or a sticky note next to the computer.

Never share the master password. The master password gives full trading access. If you need to share account view with someone, use the investor password instead.

Be cautious of phishing attempts. Legitimate TIOmarkets emails about password resets will only arrive after you have initiated the reset. Be suspicious of unsolicited password-reset emails that appear in your inbox.

If you ever suspect the password has been compromised, change it immediately and contact TIOmarkets support to review the account for any unauthorised activity.

Trading at TIOmarkets

TIOmarkets offers MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 on desktop, web, and mobile, across four account types. The Standard account is created automatically on registration with a minimum deposit of $20 or currency equivalent. The Raw and VIP Black accounts are opened separately through the client area. The Nano account is MT5 only with a $20 minimum deposit, USD only. Hedging is supported on all accounts. A swap-free Islamic account is available; contact TIOmarkets for eligibility and instrument requirements. Copy trading is available on both MT4 and MT5.

Orders are executed at the best available market price, which may result in positive or negative slippage. Demo accounts often execute instantly and may not fully replicate live slippage conditions. Spreads are variable and are typically higher than minimum figures shown. Leverage on each instrument is subject to change depending on market conditions and applicable regulatory requirements.
