How to Switch Between MT4 and MT5

BY TIOmarkets

|June 8, 2026

Switching from MT4 to MT5 at TIOmarkets is straightforward in principle but worth understanding before you start. MT4 and MT5 are separate platforms with separate logins, separate file structures, and meaningful differences in features. You cannot use the same credentials for both, and EAs, indicators, charts, and templates from one platform do not transfer directly to the other.

This guide covers the key differences between MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, why you might switch, how to open an MT5 account at TIOmarkets, what does and does not transfer between the two platforms, and how to run both side by side if you want to keep using MT4 while you try MT5.

What's the Difference Between MT4 and MT5?

MT4 and MT5 are both MetaQuotes platforms but they were designed for different generations of trading. MT4 launched in 2005 and remains widely used among forex traders. MT5 launched in 2010 with a multi-asset focus and a more capable feature set.

The headline differences include the number of available timeframes (9 on MT4, 21 on MT5), built-in technical indicators (30 on MT4, 38 on MT5), graphical objects (31 on MT4, 44 on MT5), order execution types (4 on MT4, 6 on MT5), pending order types (4 on MT4, 6 on MT5), order fill policies (1 on MT4, 3 on MT5), and total symbols available (175 on MT4, 263 on MT5).

MT5 also includes a built-in economic calendar in the Toolbox window, an MQL5 community chat, access to the MQL5 Market for purchasing EAs and indicators, and a multi-threaded strategy tester that supports multi-currency and real-tick testing. MT4 does not have these features. The strategy tester on MT4 is single-threaded.

MT5 uses MQL5 for scripting; MT4 uses MQL4. The two languages are similar but not identical, so EAs and custom indicators written for MT4 do not run on MT5 without being rewritten or recompiled.

At TIOmarkets, the unlimited leverage feature on the Standard account is available only on MT5. The Nano account is also MT5 only.

Why You Might Switch from MT4 to MT5

The decision to switch depends on which features matter to your trading. If you want more granular timeframes such as M2, M3, M4, M6, M10, M12, M20, H2, H3, H6, H8, and H12 in addition to the standard set, MT5 provides them. If you want a built-in economic calendar directly in the platform, MT5 includes one and MT4 does not. If you want to use the unlimited leverage feature on the Standard account at TIOmarkets, MT5 is required.

Multi-asset traders often prefer MT5 because of the larger symbol set and the multi-currency strategy tester. Traders who only trade forex and are happy with their existing MT4 setup may not see a meaningful reason to move.

If you are running a large library of MT4 EAs or custom indicators, the migration effort can be significant. EAs in MQL4 need to be rewritten or replaced with MQL5 versions before they will run on MT5.

How to Open an MT5 Account at TIOmarkets

If you already have an MT4 account at TIOmarkets, you can open an MT5 account through the client area. Existing TIOmarkets clients have access to the full range of account types under their login.

The Standard account is created automatically on registration; if your initial account is MT4, the Standard account you have is an MT4 Standard. To use MT5, open a new account through the client area and select MT5 as the platform. The minimum deposit on the Standard account is $20 or currency equivalent. Raw and VIP Black accounts on MT5 are opened the same way and have minimum deposits of $250 and $1,000 respectively. The Nano account is MT5 only with a $20 minimum deposit in USD.

Once the MT5 account is created, you receive separate MT5 login credentials. Use these to log into the MT5 desktop terminal, web platform, or mobile app. The MT5 terminal can be downloaded from the TIOmarkets MT5 page.

What Transfers Between MT4 and MT5

MT4 and MT5 are separate installations with separate folder structures, so very little transfers automatically.

Funds do not transfer between accounts automatically. Funds are held at the account level. To fund an MT5 account you either deposit directly to it or transfer between accounts through the client area.

Charts and templates do not transfer. MT4 uses .tpl template files in its MQL4 folder structure, and MT5 uses .tpl files in its MQL5 structure, but the file contents reference platform-specific objects. Templates from one platform may load on the other with missing elements or incorrect rendering.

Expert Advisors do not transfer. MQL4 source files cannot be compiled with the MT5 compiler, and .ex4 compiled files cannot run on MT5 at all. Any EA you want to use on MT5 must be a MQL5 version. Some commercial EAs are sold in both MT4 and MT5 versions, but each must be purchased and installed separately.

Custom indicators face the same limitation. A custom MQL4 indicator must be rewritten or replaced with a MQL5 version before it can be added to an MT5 chart.

Signal subscriptions on MT5 are managed through the MQL5 community account and are a MetaQuotes service rather than something tied to the broker.

What does carry across is your TIOmarkets identity. The same client area login lets you manage MT4 and MT5 accounts side by side, fund them, view consolidated statements, and access TIOmarkets support.

Running MT4 and MT5 Side by Side

You can have both MT4 and MT5 installed on the same computer. They run as separate applications with separate data folders, so they do not interfere with each other.

The download links for both platforms are on the TIOmarkets MT4 and MT5 pages. Install each in its default location. When you launch MT4 you log in with your MT4 credentials; when you launch MT5 you log in with your MT5 credentials. Each platform connects independently to the appropriate TIOmarkets trading server.

Running both is useful if you are evaluating MT5 while continuing to trade familiar setups on MT4, or if you want to use specific MT4 EAs alongside MT5 features such as the economic calendar and the wider timeframe set.

Practical Considerations

Once you open an MT5 account you can keep using your MT4 account indefinitely. Switching to MT5 does not require closing or migrating your MT4 account.

Each account has its own positions, margin, and equity. Risk management decisions are made per account, not across both. If you fund USD 1,000 in your MT4 account and USD 1,000 in your MT5 account, you have separate margin available on each.

EAs and indicators bought on the MQL5 Market are tied to a MetaQuotes account and a specific platform. Buying an MT5 indicator does not give you the equivalent MT4 version automatically.

Spreads are variable and are typically higher than minimum figures shown. Leverage on each instrument is subject to change depending on market conditions and applicable regulatory requirements. Orders are executed at the best available market price, which may result in positive or negative slippage. Demo accounts often execute instantly and may not fully replicate live slippage conditions.
