How to Open a Demo Account on MT4
BY TIOmarkets
|June 8, 2026A demo account is a risk-free way to practice trading on MetaTrader 4 using virtual funds. It lets you learn the platform, test trading strategies, try Expert Advisors, and get familiar with TIOmarkets symbols and account conditions before committing real money. Opening an MT4 demo account at TIOmarkets takes only a few minutes.
This guide covers what a demo account is, how to register for one through the TIOmarkets website, how to create an additional demo from within MT4 if you already have the platform installed, how to log in, and what demo trading can and cannot replicate from a live account.
What Is a Demo Account?
A demo account is a trading account funded with virtual money rather than real funds. It runs on the same MT4 platform as a live account, uses the same TIOmarkets price feed, and offers the same instruments, but every trade and every profit or loss is simulated.
Demo accounts at TIOmarkets are available with up to $50,000 of virtual funds. This gives enough headroom to practice positions of any reasonable size, including testing different lot sizes and risk profiles.
A demo account is intended for learning and testing. It is not a substitute for live trading and has some important execution differences (covered later in this guide), but for getting comfortable with MT4 mechanics and trying out trading ideas, it is the standard starting point.
How to Open an MT4 Demo Account at TIOmarkets
The standard way to open a demo account is through the TIOmarkets website.
Visit the TIOmarkets website and start the account registration process. Fill in your personal details and contact information. When prompted, select MT4 as the platform and demo as the account type. Submit the registration.
You will typically receive an email with your demo account credentials: an account number, a password, and the trading server name to use. Keep these somewhere accessible, since you will need them to log in to MT4.
Download the MT4 desktop terminal from the TIOmarkets MT4 page. The installer is available for Windows and macOS. Install MT4 in its default location. When MT4 opens for the first time, it will prompt you to choose a server from the list. Select the TIOmarkets demo server provided in your email, then enter your demo account number and password.
Once logged in, you have access to the full MT4 platform with $50,000 of virtual funds in your demo account.
Creating a Demo Account from Within MT4
If you already have MT4 installed and want to create an additional demo account, you can do this directly inside the platform.
In MT4, select File > Open an Account. The account wizard opens. Select the TIOmarkets demo server from the list (if it is not visible, you may need to add it via File > Open an Account > scan for servers, or you can type the server name manually if you have it).
Select "New demo account" and click Next. Fill in the registration form with your personal details. The form asks for the deposit amount in virtual funds (you can choose the amount up to the maximum allowed) and a desired leverage. Submit the form and the platform creates the demo account, providing you with the login and password on screen.
Make a note of the login and password. You can use them to log back in later from File > Login to Trade Account.
Logging In to Your MT4 Demo Account
To log in to your demo account at any time, open MT4 and select File > Login to Trade Account. Enter the account number, password, and server provided when the account was created.
The status bar at the bottom right of MT4 will show the connection state. A green icon with millisecond ping indicates that you are connected to the demo server and receiving live market quotes.
If you have multiple accounts (live and demo, or several demos), you can switch between them at any time using the same Login to Trade Account dialog. MT4 remembers the most recent accounts you have used, accessible from the Navigator window under the Accounts section.
What Demo Trading Can and Can't Replicate
A demo account closely matches a live account in many ways. It uses the same TIOmarkets price feed, the same instrument list, the same trading hours, the same spreads as a starting reference, and the same MT4 platform features. You can place every order type, attach EAs, use indicators, and run strategy tests just as you would on a live account.
There are limits to what demo trading can replicate. Demo accounts often execute instantly and may not fully replicate live slippage conditions. In live trading, orders are executed at the best available market price, which may result in positive or negative slippage; on demo, orders typically fill at the displayed price without the variance you would see live. Spreads on demo may also behave slightly differently in fast markets compared with live conditions.
Demo trading also does not replicate the emotional dimension of trading real money. Decisions feel different when the funds are virtual, which can make demo performance an unreliable guide to how you will trade live. Many traders find that strategies which work consistently on demo become harder to execute live because of the difference in psychological pressure.
Spreads are variable and are typically higher than minimum figures shown. Leverage on each instrument is subject to change depending on market conditions and applicable regulatory requirements.
Practical Considerations
The demo account duration at TIOmarkets is not published on the website. If you have specific questions about how long demo access remains active or what happens to an inactive demo account, contact TIOmarkets directly.
You can use Expert Advisors on a demo account exactly as you would on a live account, which makes demos useful for testing automated strategies before deploying real capital. EAs run only on the MT4 desktop terminal, not on MT4 mobile or web.
When you decide you are ready to trade live, you can open a live account through the same TIOmarkets registration process. Your demo account does not need to be closed; many traders keep a demo running alongside a live account for testing new ideas without risking real funds.
If you want to top up the virtual funds on your demo account or change settings, contact TIOmarkets support for guidance. Demo accounts do not accept deposits or withdrawals in the way live accounts do.
